Fathers day gifts are hardly as big a deal as mothers day gifts. When it comes to moms, guilt alone can make you get her something to appreciate her and since you usually want to tell mom you love her, you dish out big time. With dad you think he was the one who earned everything for your family in the first place so he probably got himself anything he really needs. Thoughts like that make you think that it won’t matter if you miss a fathers day or two and before you know it you’ve dropped out of the whole habit of celebrating the day.
When I was little we didn’t do anything special for my dad (at least not collectively like we did for mom) and I kind of always felt bad so I’d try and get my dad something, even if it was just a key chain but now that I’ve got my own family I make sure that the kids get their dad something for fathers day and I buy something special for him so he knows just how much I appreciate him for his role as a father.
Since we never really celebrated fathers day when I was a kid, it took me some time to realize what would make a good gift for my husband on fathers day.
The worst gifts that I can mention are a tie, or just about anything to do with apparel, formal or otherwise. Men just don’t get as excited about new clothes as women do and since I’m always buying clothes for the family anyway, it didn’t mean anything special when I gave my husband a nice silk tie.
As opposed to that I once made him an edible gift at home, it was just a dinner with of his favorites and he loved it. When I was a kid, I made killer cupcakes and I used to make those for my dad and he loved them just as much as my husband liked his special dinner.
Then there was the one time I saved money for about six months to buy a special edition football themed key chain, it was a digital album and key chain in one and my husband broke it in a week when he accidently dropped the car keys in the dark and then stepped on them. The idea may have been good but it just didn’t pan out.
Then there was his all time favorite gift, a fruit bouquet, pretty much like a fathers day gift basket but it was way prettier. It had all sorts of fruit like pineapples, strawberries, grapes, melons, oranges, apples, kiwi and bananas. My dad had always liked apples, (roasting them was something he looked forward to) so I got this fruit entrée for my husband who loved the gift, he shared it with the kids and that made him even happier.
Some other gifts that proved disastrous were a pair of shoes, a wallet (my husband didn’t want to stop using his old one where everything had its place) and a baseball card which I later found out I’d paid too much for. Most of the gifts that he’s liked have been food related so I’d definitely recommend those for fathers day.
